So according to eee-pc.de, Lenovo actually has an Atom-based netbook that has the Thinkpad branding. Not only the branding, it in fact looks like the x100e that was released earlier this year. This one’s called the Lenovo ThinkPad Mini 10, judging from the label that is visible on the device.
According the report, it seems like Australian schools have these ThinkPad branded netbooks that have a 10″ display and resemble the larger X100e in design. It even seems to have the trackpoint rubber nub for navigation. The processor used is however not the AMD processor that we see on the X100e. The ThinkPad MIni 10 uses a Pine Trail Atom processor – the Atom N450. Probably along with Intel’s GMA 3150 graphics.
These netbooks have apparently been found at Australian schools,which often get to customize their orders because they order in bulk. The build makes sense for a school — the ThinkPad chassis quality and build will make it last long and the Atom processor and smaller screen will bring the price down.
There is no news of whether Lenovo is actually planning to bring out these netbooks anytime soon. If these are just custom orders from schools, I don’t think they will show up in stores. But I don’t think schools get to choose the platform as well, so this might be in the pipeline and the schools might just be participating in a study. If that is the case, then we can easily expect these to turn up sometime soon.
There were also rumors of a ThinkPad Mini 11 in the interim, although no concrete evidence has turned up as of yet. If that one exists at all, then I am agreeing with Chris from SlashGear — it will probably be the Mini 10 with with display of an X100e. May be it.
